The recently held National Schools Individual Chess Championship saw 408 players qualifying for the National Junior Squad. Earlier this month three alumni of the National Junior Squad participated in the 133rd Varsity Chess Match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. IM Daniel H. Fernandez (Cambridge), WFM Danielle Ho (Cambridge), and CM Howard Chiu (Oxford) took part in the competition (which debuted in 1873) in London, on 7 March 2015.
All three of them trained and built up their chess foundation during their years as Singapore Chess Federation's (SCF) National Junior Squad members. All of them won their individual games with Howard Chiu as Captain of the Oxford team winning his third straight Varsity game. The SCF congratulates all three players for doing Singapore proud. In case you are wondering the final result was a 4-4 draw and the overall score now stands at Cambridge 58, Oxford 53, Drawn 22.
As the SCF is organizing the 16th Asean+ Age Group Championships from 8-17 Jun 2015, it is worth noting that all three of them achieved their FM, WFM, CM titles from these Championships in Pattaya 2005.
