The 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship, presented by Google, has been captivating, with reigning champion Ding Liren and challenger Gukesh Dommaraju tied at 3.5-3.5 after seven intense games.
The aforementioned event is by far the strongest chess tourney on the local chess calendar. With 34 titled players inclusive of 11 GMs, last year's edition had 188 players contesting for the 25000 dollars prize fund.
Recently, the SCF Training and Development team conducted a "sorting assessment" for all of our NJS trainees. The purposes of this assessment is to group players of similar levels in the various training squads. All the students had 60 minutes to answer 15 questions. 14 of these 15 questions are focused on various important chess concepts, while the last question was to test a player's general knowledge about famous chess players.
In a recently concluded Commonwealth Chess Championship, that took place in a historical Malacca (Malaysia), Singapore was represented by a huge contingent of 37 players. With all the parents, coaches and irreplaceable Carleton, the delegation was way more than 50 people!
For Singaporeans, it’s a big struggle to even stay awake or complete the event because 12am (Early Titled Tuesday) and 6am (Late Titled Tuesday) aren’t exactly conducive for good chess since we’re close to dozing off on the board. Moreover, the field comprises many world class Grandmasters vying for the top prize of USD$1000 (2nd $750, 3rd $500, 4th-5th and top lady $100 each).
IM Siddharth Jagadeesh became Singapore's 2nd youngest IM in our history just last year in 2022. Sidd has now set his sights higher and dreams of becoming a GM within the next 2 years. The Inter-Professional Games returns this year after a 3-year hiatus. This multi-sport event, contested between the Lawyers (Law Society of Singapore), Doctors (Singapore Medical Association), Engineers (Institution of Engineers Singapore) and Accountants (Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants) has traditionally included chess and this year, the playing field included 2 Grandmasters, 2 International Masters and many former National Champions and players.
