Community Outreach

In collaboration with CDC Central and supported by Mayor Denise Phua, Chess@Central is a pilot project to provide chess activities in the central district. Registration is free as we want chess to be accessible to underserved families living in the area. The first sessions at Kampong Glam CC were led by SCF’s lead coaches and saw over 70 participants join in to learn the basics of chess. We have since participated in another Chess@Central session at Marymount CC.

In the coming year, we’re planning to organise many more such workshops at different locations across the district, giving young families a fun and easy introduction to the world of chess.

ParaChess

SCF’s ParaChess movement provides fully funded training for aspiring para-athletes, and subsidies and special provisions in SCF-organised tournaments.

We are also in discussions with MCCY on an islandwide pilot programme to bring chess to more people with disabilities.

Additional support will help us reach more people with different types of special needs, and potentially fund para-athletes to represent Singapore at international games.

Prisoners’ Rehabilitation

Since 2023, we have been working with the Singapore Prison Service to bring weekly chess classes to inmates in maximum security prison and prison school. Thanks to the positive response of the fledgling prison chess community, chess has been made a mandatory activity for violent offenders in the Violence Transformational Environment programme.

With additional support, the SCF would like to increase the scope of our training, with a long-term view to representing Singapore at the Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners.
