Hong Leong Foundation supports Chess For Freedom

The Singapore Chess Federation (SCF) expresses its deepest appreciation to the Hong Leong Foundation for its generous contribution to the Federation’s Chess for Freedom (CFF) Programme, an initiative launched in 2023 in partnership with the Singapore Prison Service (SPS).

The Chess for Freedom Programme was introduced with the aim of using chess as a tool for rehabilitation, personal development, and positive engagement among inmates. Since its inception at Institution B1, the programme has grown remarkably — from an initial group of approximately 30 inmates to a thriving community of more than 80 inmates who participate regularly in chess activities and training.

Through regular coaching sessions, structured activities, and organised competitions, the programme provides opportunities for inmates to develop skills such as self-discipline, critical thinking, emotional resilience, and perseverance. Chess has become more than a game at Institution B1; it now serves as a meaningful platform for self-improvement and social connection.

SCF President Dr. Hsu Li Yang said: “We are deeply grateful to the Hong Leong Foundation for their belief in the transformative power of chess and their support for this important initiative. Their contribution will allow us to further strengthen and expand the programme, creating more opportunities for inmates to benefit from the life skills and personal growth that chess can offer.”

The Federation also acknowledged the invaluable partnership and support from the Singapore Prison Service, whose collaboration has been instrumental to the programme’s success and sustainability.

Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Matthew Wee Yik Keong, said: “Seeing our inmates grow through the Chess for Freedom Programme has been truly encouraging. Inmates who have taken part have shared that it has taught them to think before acting and to be more patient — qualities that are essential for reintegration into society. We are grateful to the Singapore Chess Federation for their partnership and commitment to supporting the rehabilitation of our inmates, and we look forward to growing this programme together.”

As the programme continues to expand, SCF is also inviting members of the chess community and the wider public to volunteer. Volunteers play a critical role in mentoring participants, conducting chess sessions, and fostering a positive, encouraging environment for learning and growth.

The Singapore Chess Federation remains committed to making chess accessible to all segments of society and strongly believes in the game’s ability to inspire hope, build character, and create meaningful social impact.
